/Academy of Fisheries and Marine Sciences in Angola/

The Academy of Fishery and Marine Sciences in Namibe has been created in the area of almost 90 ha. The academic facilities have over 50 000 m2 and hold: 30 laboratories, Engine Room Laboratory, Maritime Rescue Centre, Simulator workshops and much more. The Academy has capacity to admit 1500 students on 14 specialties within 3 faculties.

NAVIMOR is executing the biggest educational project in Africa – The construction and establishment of The Academy of Fishery and Marine Sciences in Namibe (Academia de Pescas e Ciências do Mar do Namibe).

The Academy was formed, at the request of the Government of the Republic of Angola, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Namibe province. The project was highly complexed with a wide scope of assignments - starting from creating the concept, through deliveries of all materials, construction works of facilities, personnel training and establishment of educational process. The Maritime Academy in Gdynia was the educational partner of the project.

The construction and establishment of the Academy of Fishery and Marine Sciences is the most significant Polish project and one of the biggest European educational project in Africa.

The entire investment covers an area of over 80 ha. The scope included the construction of the main university buildings with an area of more than 29,000 m2, navigation simulator center, sea and fire rescue center, 30 thematic laboratories, marine power plant center and many others.

The whole project also included the creation of the curriculum, organizational concept, IT system for university management and the provision of training and research vessels.

Approximately 80% of all the materials and equipment used for the construction of the Academy and its facilities was shipped from Poland to Moçâmede. The materials were transported by sea in over 300 containers.

Prior to shipment, all the materials and elements were thoroughly checked by Navimor's specialists and the representatives of the Ministry of Fishery of Angola.

The second stage of the project comprised 10 different operational areas– from the construction of the Academy’s buildings to the educational support.

Main Facilities

The main buildings of the Academy accommodate 30 laboratories, several simulator rooms, 25 teaching rooms, 12 conference rooms, 5 large lecture rooms and the main auditorium for 300 students.

Indoor:

Navigation Simulator Centre

Is made of 5 state-of-the-art simulators, designed to comply with the newest standards and upcoming trends. Thanks to their flexibility and wide functionality, the students have opportunity to operate both a small fishing boat and a large container ship.

30 Science Laboratories

Are designed and fully equipped to allow students to effectively gain practical knowledge. There are, among the others, such laboratories as laboratory of chemistry, parasitology, ichthyology, ecophysiology, electronics, vessel construction, automatics and many others.

Training Centre of Maritime Rescue and Firefighting Simulator

Is designed to offer marine rescue training for careers in seamanship, fishing and offshore profession in the area of safety and maritime rescue. This Training Centre of 2800 sqm comprises the following facilities:

a 50m-long pool with the newest marine rescue training aids, including rescue equipment, rescue boat, pneumatic raft and training platform for launching rescue rafts and boats,
free-fall boat simulator,
training ground with equipment for firefighting training, including fire training simulator

Engine Room Centre

Is designed to conduct several courses in operating and maintaining a top-class main engine. Marine mechanic training will be also conducted in Manual Processing and Machining Laboratory, Metrology Laboratory and Welding Laboratory.

Residential area for academic staff

Residential area for academic staff consists of 12 single-storey houses. Each house was designed according to the latest trends and technologies and is fully equipped. The size of the houses differs from 150m2 to 180 m2. Each house consists of spacious living room, kitchen, 3-4 bedrooms and 4-5 toilets.

Dormitories for Students

Student housing consists of two 2-floor buildings. The campus stretches out on the area of 2000 m2. The dormitories were designed to accommodate 120 students. They have fully functional bedrooms, refreshment rooms, a sanitary unit, air-conditioning and kitchenette.

Roads, parkings, water supply and electric energy line

The newly built water supply system and electric energy network provide undisturbed water and power supply to the campus. The electric energy line is 3km long and the length of water supply line exceeds 7 km. In case of power outage in the city, the facilities are equipped with generators to provide power supply to the campus.

APCN area displays marine style architecture and is decorated with sculptures designed by Polish students for their peers in Angola.

Educational area of the project

Maritime Academy in Gdynia is Navimor’s educational partner in this project. Academic professors and teachers with an extensive educational experience have created the organizational and functional program for the Academy. Laboratory instructions and university books were specially written for the 14 specialties that will be taught in the Academy. Furthermore, since 2014, 20 Angolan students have been studying for bachelor, master and doctoral degree in the Maritime Academy in Gdynia.

All construction works were finished in 2015.

The Academy Open Days

Mainly Polish producers and contractors were employed in the project. 94 companies from Poland were engaged and over 250 Polish specialist worked in Namibe. Approximately 80% of all the materials and equipment used for the construction of the Academy was shipped from Poland to Moçâmedes.
